“Paul is like one of our team, not a separate entity. He has the same level of dedication to our business as we do, and he shares in the excitement of our successes. Together we have built our industry knowledge and insight, by working hard and sharing a few laughs. He’s our biggest fan club, our voice of reason, our highly trusted advisor, and oh yeah, our accountant.”
Mark McAskill, Proprietor, Mark McAskill Jewellery Pty Ltd
South Australian success story, Mark McAskill Jewellery is one of the most highly regarded jewellery manufacturers in Australia, supplying to retail stores throughout Australasia and the United Kingdom. From humble beginnings out of Mark’s parent’s shed, to a highly sophisticated production studio with 30 staff, Mark and his wife Lynda continue to build a business based on service, quality and remaining ahead of the game. Years of personal grind and passion have been invested and now the business itself is a core element of their family and one that requires considered protection.
Mark and Lynda started the business at an early age, prior to having children and gaining the experience and knowledge required to run a business of its current magnitude. Accounting books were all hand written and their accountant’s role barely extended past basic tax returns. In the late 90s Paul McCarthy from Hattam McCarthy Reeves was introduced to Mark through a mutual friend and provided advice that went far beyond that of an accountant, and before long became an integral part of the McAskill business.
While Mark’s focus is on the perfection of design and production, Lynda manages the administration of the business. Having created systems and procedures from the ground up, it is important to her to maintain control over the business workings and not just hand over responsibilities to an accountant. Paul’s ability to work with the couple using their own language, and guiding them to make informed and considered decisions, has not only set core foundations for success, but transferred knowledge and confidence to allow his role as an Advisor to grow with the business. Lynda identifies one of Paul’s key strengths, “he is an advisor rather than accountant, his hands on approach and insight means he knows what steps we need to take next before we do, and he guides us there within our control.”
Paul’s advice has involved many facets of the business from corporate structures, taxation issues, debtor management, cash flow, advice on growth and insurances, personal wills, self managed super funds, and asset protection. He helps the business stop, review and strategically plan ahead for maximum return without the risk of growing too fast too quickly.
Mark and Lynda can confidently assess the risks of business and personal opportunities with the knowledge that their business is strong and secure. They are supported by an advisor who they regard as a part of their business, someone who is equally excited about their success and empowers them to continue their innovation.
